For two nights of the week the choir is offering a unique opportunity to make a difference to your way of life. Don’t worry, there is no voice test and you are not expected to be a soloist. BUT, if you do have ambitions...more

Musical Director John Samuel
was born in Treorchy,
now lives in Caerphilly, and is a graduate of University College Cardiff.
His working life has been spent in education, as head of Music at
Caerphilly Boys’ Grammar Technical School, Senior Lecturer in music at the
College of Education in Barry, and finally Senior Lecturer and Chief Vocal
Coach at the (now Royal) Welsh College of Music and Drama.
John has had a
distinguished career as a choral conductor and as piano accompanist. He
has directed Caerphilly Male Choir (he is now their Patron), the Royal
Welsh, Ebbw Vale and Dowlais Male Choirs and was, for almost thirty years,
accompanist to the celebrated tenor Stuart Burrows. More recently, he has
assisted other choirs, both on the podium and at the piano, in Wales and
overseas, and was the Guest Accompanist on Pendyrus’ tour of New Zealand
and Australia in 1998.
The untimely death of
Glynne Jones, Pendyrus’ director from 1962 – 2000, brought John Samuel out
of ‘retirement’ to help the choir fulfil its commitment at this most
difficult time. Subsequently, he was invited to become its Musical
Director in March 2001 (only the fourth in the choir’s history) – and
invitation he was delighted to accept.
Most recently, he has
directed the Association of Male Choirs tour of New Zealand and Australia
and of South Africa. He has also conducted their ‘1000 Voices’ concert at
London’s Royal Albert Hall.
This year, John Samuel
has reached a musical milestone and is celebrating fifty years as a
conductor of male choruses.
Accompanist Gavin Parry
was educated at Cardiff High
School, and read Physics at Bristol University, where he graduated with a
Bachelor of Science degree. He studied piano while at school,
becoming a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music , and
resumed his studies on leaving university. Gavin Parry was appointed accompanist to Pendyrus in September
1973, and was awarded Life Membership of the choir in 1994.
