Peter Radford – a brief profile.
Those who were at the concert on Saturday will have heard the Prof talking about Peter during the concert. Peter and his wife were instrumental in getting us the closing concert of the Burford Festival on Saturday and provided the platform for one of the best concerts we’ve had in recent years.
Here’s a bit of info re. Peter who is of course a great friend of our very own Morgan Thomas.
Peter was a highly successful athlete in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s specialising in the 100 metre sprint and the 4 x 100 metres relay. He was a gold medal winner in the Commonwealth Games held in Cardiff in 1958 and again in Perth in 1962. In the European Championships in Stockholm in ‘58 he won a silver and bronze medal and in the Olympic Games in 1960 he won 2 bronze medals – one in the relay and one in the 100 metre solo sprint. Quite a glittering career and unbelievably all this following a few years in a wheelchair as a child due to a serious kidney illness.
In 2001 he wrote a biography of the Scottish athlete Robert Barclay Allardice and in 1993 he was Chairman of UK Athletics. He lectured in Sports Science at Glasgow University and Brunel University
